With Enough Vitamin D Through The Winter

Strictly speaking, vitamin D, spelled out cholecalciferol, is not a vitamin because our body produces it itself with the help of sunlight.

We need this pseudo vitamin for the calcium balance, but also for nerves and muscles: if there is a lack of cholecalciferol in the body, there is a risk of bent bones, cardiovascular diseases, sleep disorders and a host of other symptoms. In Germany, almost everyone has a slight vitamin D deficiency at the end of winter, and many even have a severe vitamin D deficiency - but this can be prevented.

Vitamin D For The Winter Months

Prevention

The human body stores vitamin D in the liver and fatty tissue . This lasts for weeks to months. If you are in the sun regularly around noon throughout the summer and into the fall, you can store cholecalciferol for the dark days. From October to March, on the other hand, there is not enough solar radiation in Germany, even at midday, to form vitamin D - other sources are needed during these months.

Vitamin D From Food

There are not many foods with vitamin D in usable amounts: actually only oily fish. The children had to take a spoonful of cod liver oil a day earlier so that they didn't get rickets. Matjes herring, salmon, eel or sardines do the trick too. Hen's eggs and cow's milk, on the other hand, contain vitamin D, but far too little - you would only get your daily requirement with a dozen eggs or 22 liters of milk a day.
